Development of Balal Oil ‎Field

Development of Balal Oil ‎Field
Executive Activities
Drilling of 5 production wells and 5 injection wells to inject 50,000 barrels water per day in order to maintain reservoir pressure to facilitate the increased output.

Artificial recovery techniques with in-well-installed pumps (ESP) will be used in this project. Major equipment includes ;2 main production/residential platforms, flare platform and well-head platform system of transferring oil to Lavan Island, water-injection system, generators and fuel- supply systems.
Location
The Belal oil field is located approximately 100 km southwest of Lavan Island, west of South Pars gas field at proximity of water border with Qatar with geographic location of approximately 26,19 N, 52,32,E, where water depth is approximately 67m.
Basic Contractor
Elf petroleum Iran (46.76%), ‎B.V.(15%)‎
and Agip Iran (38.25%)
Project Schedule
The effective date of the contract was April 1999 and the date of first production coincided with the anniversary of Islamic Republic Revolution in Feb. 2003. A total of 18 million barrels of oil has so far been produced which has a value of 400 MM.

Balal Oil Field

The daily oil production rate of 40000 STB can be achieved by drilling five production wells and injecting 50000 BWPD through five water injection wells in order to maintain the reservior pressure. The crude oil production upon primary process at production platform will be transferred to Lavan Island facilities by a 14" pipeline for final processing and blends with Salman field oil production. The first drilled well tested at the rate of 12500 BOPD which was beyond expectation.

THE HISTORY OF PROJECT

The Belal field (EX-Bahram) was discovered in october1967 by Lapco through drilling the well the 3W-1 with assistance of Iranian and expatriate specialists. Two appraisal wells (3W-2 and 3W-3) were drilled in 1968 and 1972  respectively.

THE TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE FIELD

The Belal field is a dome structure analogous to a circle with a diameter of 2.5 km. The area of the field, at top of  Hith-Arab formation, is about 16 km2. The main resevior of this field, is Arab formation composed of carbonate, and subdivided into 7 layers. The secondary structrres in this field are Khatiyah, Shuaiba and Khuf respectively. The average depth of resevoir is about 6000 ft containing a light and relatively good quality crued oil with API of 44 degrees. The ultimate recoverable oil reserve is estimated to be 117 MMSTB which will be achived by daily water injection rate of 50000 BWPD and considering the original oil in place of 293 million barrels, the recovery factor will be 40% for a period of 14 years which is envisaged to be a very good recovery factor.

THE PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF PROJECT

A total of three offshore platforms, have been installed in Belal field as setforth below:

1. PLQP (accommodation-production)

2. WHP (drilling platform)

3. FLARE (flare platform)

The foresaid platforms are connected by linked bridges.

The production and accommodation platforms have been combined.

Each platform is consisted of two parts:

1. Jacket

2. Topside

Jackets and decks, with a total weight of 8500 tons, were installed. The drilling platform has 16 slots with 30 inches conductor pipe. The PLQP can accommodate a total of 40 personnel in two shifts.

JOB OPPORTUNITY

Upon complete producion of the Belal field a total of 120 direct and 100 indirect employees job opportunities are created.

TRAINING AND TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER

The contractor is obliged to spend 2 percent of CAPEX for training and technology transfer in order to enable the Iranian personnel to handle the Belal field operation which is approximately $3 MM. In an attempt to accomplish the foresaid objective, Various training sessions, both in Iran and abroad, were established. A total of 250  of IOOCs personnel participated in various training courses in France, England, Holland, Singapore as well as Mahmood Abad, Tehran, Kish, Lavan, Farashband and Belal platform in five training stages.
