Research and innovation are immensely essential to any nation"s advancement, development, social welfare, and independence. Hence, research investment and conduct based on the state"s demands are crucial to non-stop advancement and pivotal to constant progression. Research is, indeed, deciphering the secrets of phenomena. Being innately curious, man is interminably passionate to crack the wonders of the world, and research is the key to puzzle out the marvels of universe. In social life, too, research is a means to the nation"s advances of technology, development, and incremental productivity. Thus, its significance, as a chief factor of progress in developing countries, is crystal clear. Not gainsaying that today"s amount of investment in research is in direct proportion with the nation"s progress.
1. PEDEC
Petroleum Engineering and Development Company (PEDEC) was established in 1994. It aims at supervising and managing the engineering and development projects by planning, engineering, constructing, and implementing National Iranian Oil Company"s projects. It also studies and operates development projects to explore, extract, and produce crude oil, natural gas, and other solid and liquid hydrocarbors (save for coal) to meet National Iranian Oil Company"s (NIOC) requirements, improve upstream technology, and make the most of local sources in implementation of projects.
2. R&D in PEDEC
R&D was established in July 19, 2000 by ratification of the Council of Deputies to develop research activities and improve technical expertise in oil industry.
Research is the basis of constant development and technological advancement which are the spirit of any industry. The establishment of PEDEC"s R&D concurred with the start of the 2000s. The company"s R&D follows the latest scientific achievements and state-of-the-art technology, as well as recent development and operational activities in oil industry. It seeks and presents appropriate practical and theoretical courses of action to help solve the problems hindering technological progress. Applying the research results decreases the costs, increases the income, boosts productivity, and helps make the best of installations.

PEDEC"s R&D falls into two main sections: research and transfer of technology.
Research Council, with PEDEC"s managing director as the head, outlines the main duties of R&D. Studying and approving the company"s plans and projects, allocating annual budgets, and evaluating the performance of R&D are among the main tasks of the above-mentioned council.
To determine research priorities and take advantage of financial, technical, etc. advices, they have formed groups of experts in research and transfer of technology whose main tasks are:
· Studying the existing upstream problems in oil industry and defining appropriate research projects to compile new technical expertise and achieve advanced technology
· Offering suggestions on the presented research projects
· Evaluating, approving, or stopping the implementation of the underway research projects
